Flat Earth Counter Argument Thread

Before someone thinks I believe this: I don't. It's ridiculous. But it is hilarious to look at the Flat Earth Forums (as you can find here). Turns out there's a flat earth podcast (I had no clue). I also suggest you look at the comment section of this video titled "The Head of the Illuminati Hydra - The Jesuits", and by a channel named "Flat Water Flat Earth". Many people in that comment section are obviously serious, so you know the world has gone into crisis. I suggest you don't watch the actual video, as it is a 2 hour and 40 minute documentary describing how the Pope is ruling the world and we are all part of the new world order. Yep. Not to mention their are three channels with the name "Flat Water Flat Earth", for reasons I do not know. Oh yeah, and here is a NINE HOUR VIDEO ABOUT THE "EARTH'S TRUE PHYSICS"! Guess who it's made by? A fourth channel named "Flat Water"!! I leave you with that.

I am going to be explaining everything wrong with this video. Let's start with the first real statement: "Flat Earth is considered to be the monster of all conspiracy theories. But is it a theory? Is there some truth to it?" Already, they've skewed the definition of theory so that it means "an educated guess that's probably not true." This should be fun. "One of the first videos I came about was Flat Earth Clues, which I found so compelling, that I told everyone that I knew to watch it." What friends do you have that you believe they would sit through a 2 hour documentary about how the Earth is flat? No seriously, I need friends who'd do that for me. How'd you get friends like that? But seriously, that video referenced basically is saying "Wow, since the space race, nukes were launched and stuff, and Antarctica was banned! That means the government is hiding something!" To which I say: people went to Antarctica before 1958 (which is when it supposedly happened), and no one has fallen off the earth. They've made a book about this documentary. It's shipping now.

The flat Earthers are very stupid. Some of their argument are decently put together but most are totally flawed. For any of their arguments to hold any grounds they must deny all images from space as being true. Why would governments around the world invest billions of dollars in satellites, space telescopes and manned space mission, to just "hide the reality that the Earth is flat". There is NO argument we HAVE been to space.

We can actually prove that the Earth's surface is in fact curved with positive curvature by using simple trigonometry. Take a large enough triangle on the earth's surface, and the angles will add up to more than 180 degrees. This proves that the surface of the earth is no-flat (a non Euclidean surface) with positive curvature (therefore a sphere). This can be measured with relative ease via lasers etc.

This is a great idea Lucas, lets try to collate as many counter-arguments as possible on this thread!

On the flat earth society wiki, they say that the setting sun is an illusion, and is really just the sun getting really far away, like birds flying off in the distance. Do they have a diagram? No. Do they have proof? No. Does this even make much sense? No. Their own example is proof that the Earth is round, since for the birds to get lower down towards the horizon would mean that the Earth can't be flat. Does it have to be sphere for this effect? Not necessarily, but it certainly can't be flat. How would this sinking below the horizon effect work on a flat disk? No clue, and I'm not sure they do either. They also believe that the sun isn't shrinking or getting larger because it is magnified with distance (which just happens to be exactly proportional to the distance it is away), which they say has been proven. They don't link to any credible or peer-reviewed sources. The only thing they link to is "Earth Not a Globe", of which performed no experiments. By the way, the quoting of this was done so poorly that the html symbol code for the quote mark was still left in. I'll leave you with that.
