The "False" Puzzle

You are near an island surrounded by a moat that is 10 meters wide on all lengths perpendicular to the sides of the island. You need to get to the center, but you only have two 9 meter long planks of wood. How would you get across with simply stacking the boards across? The answer to the problem is to place one of the boards on the corner of the moat and set the other one perpendicular to that one. Although, a lot of people got that the answer is invalid. Put up argument claims to mine.

The shape of the moat matters doesn't it? Are we taking it to be square, circular, ellipse?

I should have drawn a diagram. It is a square moat. That's why you could use some trig.
