Eigenvector intuition for normal modes?

You can find the normal modes of a system of coupled oscillators by finding the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the equations of motions reduced into matrix form. I can find these without a problem but I don't have intuition as to why the eigenvectors represent the normal co-ordinates of the system, and why the eigenvalues represent the characteristic frequencies of the normal modes!
